8 Best Mid Century Modern Coffee Tables in 2024

A curated list of iconic mid century Coffee Tables by the ikkonic design team

What are Mid Century Modern Coffee Tables?

Most people are aware of the mid-century modern style. But it helps to have a summary of what makes mid-century modern furniture, in particular the sofa, different from other styles. Not all mid-century sofas are the same, but they share similar characteristics that make them easy to spot.

Characteristics of Mid-Century Modern Coffee Tables

1. Less is More: Mid-century design typically falls under the philosophy of 'less is more.' Coffee tables from this era are characterized by their clean lines and minimalistic silhouettes, often looking more like pieces of modern sculpture than commonplace furniture. Extraneous decoration or ornamentation is rarely seen in mid-century design.

2. Organic Shapes: Recognizing the harmony between form and function, mid-century coffee tables commonly feature organic and flowing shapes, often inspired by nature. Rounded corners, smooth curves, or abstract, free-form designs are not uncommon.

3. Materials Matter: One of the hallmarks of mid-century design is the innovative use of new materials. For coffee tables, this might mean a combination of traditional woods with then-novel materials like plastic, glass, metal, or even fiberglass.

4. Emphasis on Functionality: Every element of design in a mid-century coffee table has a purpose. Functionality is always at the forefront, with ease of use and comfort being an integral part of the design. It's typical to find tables offering built-in storage or design elements that enhance the piece's utility.

5. Geometric Influence: In line with the minimalistic approach, the use of simple geometric shapes, like rectangles, circles, or triangles, often plays a significant role in the design of mid-century coffee tables. This consolidates both the aesthetic and functional aspects of the piece, promoting seamless integration with the surrounding living space.

Noguchi Table

📷 Image from
Herman Miller
The Noguchi Table, a truly timeless piece, is a blissful fusion of art and furniture. The brainchild of sculptor Isamu Noguchi who dabbled in not just sculpting, but environmental design and set creation too, was conceived in 1942 for iconic manufacturer Herman Miller. Noguchi’s keen eye for simplicity and form is beautifully laid bare in this furniture masterpiece.

The genius of the Noguchi Table lies in its elegant simplicity, deceptive strength, and inherent balance. Two free-formed, morphic pieces of solid wood interlock, forming a sturdy tripod that supports a luxurious thick glass tabletop. The table is a design paradox, appearing incredibly minimalist while revealing the complex artistry of its structure.

Its versatility in blending into different decors is certainly its superpower. Achieving a wide spectrum of aesthetics, the table is available in classic walnut or engaging white ash finished to arrest the ‘freshly-cut state’ of the wood, granting it a creamy white, non-yellowing hue over time.

An underrated gem in the world of furniture design, the Noguchi Table dons two etched signatures, on the tabletop’s edge and on a base medallion, confirming its authenticity and linking it indelibly to its creator. The epitome of mid-century modern design, the Noguchi Table is not simply an item of furniture, but a sleek, sinuous piece of art that doubles up as a sturdy, functional table. A genuine keeper this one, we say!

Isamu Noguchi
Dealer Description:

Following his apprenticeship with the legendary Constantin Brancusi, sculptor Isamu Noguchi began to experiment in environmental design, theatrical sets – he was the only designer that choreographer Martha Graham would work with – and, eventually, product design. He created his first furniture prototypes for Herman Miller in 1942 and went on to work with companies such as Steuben and Zenith. The Noguchi Table (1948) conceals nothing, revealing everything about the nature of simplicity. Two smoothly shaped pieces of solid wood interlock to form a tripod that supports a thick glass tabletop. The base is available in black, walnut, white oak, and white ash, the latter of which is finished with a process that arrests the wood in its freshly cut state, resulting in a creamy white color that will not turn yellow over time. This is the authentic Noguchi Table by Herman Miller.  A stamp of authenticity. To signify its authenticity, this table etched with Noguchi's signature in two places: on the longest edge of the glass tabletop and on a medallion underneath the base. It also holds a registered trademark for its unique configuration.
